The Ministry of Industry, in collaboration with Life Cycle Indonesia (LCI), hosted a Dissemination on Circular Economy Implementation for Three Sectors (Textiles, Plastics, Electronics) on November 26, 2024, at the Arya Duta Hotel, Bali. This event showcased efforts to advance Indonesia’s decarbonisation goals through the adoption of circular economy principles in key industrial sectors.

The event presented the outcomes of a four-month assistance program led by LCI, providing technical guidance to support industries in implementing circular economy practices. Attended by government representatives, industries from the plastics, electronics, and textile sectors, associations, and financial institutions, the forum showcased progress, challenges, and practical solutions for integrating circular economy principles into business practices. Key discussions revolved around enhancing energy efficiency, implementing recycling innovations, and aligning policies with global standards to drive sustainability and decarbonization.

Success stories from each sector highlighted the tangible outcomes of the program. For instance, in textiles production, waste was transformed into new fibers, reducing reliance on virgin materials. The plastics sector demonstrated significant progress in utilising recycled content and addressing market challenges such as stigma about recycled plastic. Meanwhile, the electronics industry showcased innovations such as second-life applications for EV batteries and the adoption of ecodesign principles to minimize waste. Across all sectors, Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) were utilised to measure environmental impacts, enabling participants to understand reduced emissions and improved resource efficiency.

LCI had the honour as the program’s consultant, providing structured assistance to industries through tailored strategies and actionable roadmaps. During the event, Dr. Jessica Hanafi, LCI’s technical expert, presented the program’s outcomes and methodologies. She emphasized how baseline assessments, sector-specific strategies, and collaboration fostered measurable progress in material recovery and recycling rates. Dr. Jessica also underscored the importance of aligning practices with global standards such as ISO 59000 on Circular Economy, ensuring participants remain competitive in international markets.

By facilitating this comprehensive assistance program, LCI helped industries implement practical and sustainable solutions that contribute to Indonesia’s decarbonization agenda.
